The studio
Every object begins with a dot.
A dot is the smallest mark of intention, the beginning of every drawing, every form, every object. We start every design with that intention, and the rest follows. The name comes from Afi plus dot. Afidot is a design studio and fab lab founded by a designer couple.
The founders
Afi Barati is a product designer and artist who has spent more than a decade designing digital products for major media and telecom companies in the US. Amir Ashtiani is an architect who spent years working on high rise buildings in Manhattan and around the world. Both come from families rooted in architecture and construction. Design brought them together, first as partners in life, then in work.
Afi shapes the objects and the experience around them. Amir builds the technology that makes them possible, a computational workflow that prints complex forms with no supports and almost no waste.
Shop the collectionIt starts with a story
Every piece starts as a functional object. Then comes the story, a meaning drawn from human nature and the cultures we carry. Every sketch goes through at least ten iterations before form, proportion, and function settle together. If an object is not useful, it does not leave the studio.
Engineered to print
Amir built a workflow that prints every piece with no support material, the part of 3D printing that usually becomes waste. The geometry itself is the engineering. We design from the capability of the printer and new technologies, not the other way around. Forms that were once impossible or too costly to produce become a single continuous print.
Printed to order
We print each piece only when you order it, in our New Jersey fab lab, from 100% recycled PLA. No inventory, no overproduction, near zero waste. Caring for the environment is not a feature of our process. It is the process. Some pieces are then painted by hand.
Rooted in heritage
Persian heritage is where we started, but heritage itself is the point. We bring stories from three thousand years ago into the homes of today and pass them to the generation after. Every piece carries something to learn, a form, a symbol, a story worth keeping alive.
